final thoughts: okay as much as i don’t love that ending and it felt kinda cheap and not great writing wise it’s not assssss awful as i expected from the way people talk about it but also i don’t have the background of watching the show for 15 years. plus i knew most of the spoilers so it’s hard to say what i actually would have thought if i saw it the way intended. main takeaways:
1. wtf did castiel not show up in heaven hm ??
2. i’m pissed they didn’t include at least a tiny mention of eileen :( all that set up for her and sam relationship just for her to die, presumably be brought back to life but not even mentioned??
3. i need fix it fics. immediately.

hiiii ❤️ ik ur a big jenate/blairdan fan (i am too ! ) so since I wanted to talk to sm ab them i thought id ask you <3: this is one of my ques but
how do you think their friends and family would feel about their relationship/s, even tho we already saw rufus and eleanor for a while when it came to fair but still we never saw alison/harold and for jenate they were never canon so we never got a chance to see that with the archiblads/humphreys (but i am also curious of what rufus would think of jennate esp if it happened in s2/3 since we saw dans reaction but never rufuses)
well for dan/blair; i think harold would be very happy for blair, because yk dan is a bookish nice guy, and harold always seemed like a nice guy that wanted blair to be happy. as for alison, i think alison would have to warm up to blair at first, but eventually i think alison would like blair.
for jenny/nate, i think rufus would be against it first-- similar to dan, his concerns with nate being a bit older than jenny, but eventually i think he'd accept their relationship and willingly welcome nate to the family. i think alison would like nate, as she did seem a little more laid back compared to rufus. and for nates parents-- well, simply put, they both suck, so really their opinion doesn't matter lol
thank you for this question anon!! it's always nice to meet other dair/jenate fans and this question was fun to answer <3

Because I’ve got birthdays on the mind, some thoughts on the gang as gift givers:
Dan: altogether bad with the material, his best work is making more of an experience—Blair’s plastic crown, Serena’s Christmas tree. Think taking Nate to laser tag, getting Vanessa into a series of silent movies with a live and professional organist. With people he can’t do that for, he often defaults to books
Jenny: goes for the handmade! That doesn’t necessarily mean a clothing item; she’s got other artistic interests. She’s also claim it isn’t, like, a sweet thing all the time, often it’s just easier to make a pair of wire and bead earrings in colors that she knows suit someone’s skin tone than to go out and find them
Nate: doesn’t put much thought into it. If he sees something he think someone will like, he’ll get it. If he doesn’t, he’ll get something everybody likes—like coffee, right? Loves it when people have wishlists
Serena: secret superpower of planning personalized events (inverted/turned evil on Jenny’s Clue and crock pot night). Generally, if she’s not giving a party though, it… falls a little flat. Definitely something liked, but it has a sense she sort of just threw money at it
Lily: literally throws money at it. Once she actually did just give Serena some and tell her to buy her own gift, which resulted in her always giving Eric the money as a “birthday shopping trip.” (This worked well, seeing as what he wanted was her time.) Will generally get something of very high quality she sees as necessary—eg a good suit for Dan—for the Humphrey side of the family
Rufus: likes to give people art (whether visual/musical/other) over anything that might be practical. Weirdly good at finding things that make an immediate emotional impact on the person, which is part of how he ended up being pushed into art salesman with his gallery. Despite this, he has also given his kids a multitude of socks over the years
Eric: will just ask people what they want. If at a loss, he usually gets something small and ornamental (a piece of jewelry, a stuffed animal, whatever) so that it can be easily hidden away if not wanted
Vanessa: considers giving money as a gift—whether disguised or not—the highest possible crime. She makes things and does consider it to be a sweet thing. One of her more famous film festival entries actually still starts with the “hey, I love you, I hope you like this” message from the first draft; Serena insisted that she not cut it
Blair: much like Dan, finding the right gift is a process of deep frustration until she finally gets it right. Blair, however, is all about getting the right material object—the thing you open and stare at and keep around for years. She will do research on her targets beforehand

Man, this wonderful Jenny meta I reblogged has me thinking SO many thoughts, especially about the Dan-Jenny dynamic and this line in particular:
“one scene that stands out to me is when jenny steals the dress in season one and dan goes into talk to her and it’s so clear he’s had to take on somewhat of a parental role with her since their mom has been gone? and i’m sure that’s frustrating for both jenny and for dan. but despite taking on this role of care, he doesn’t treat her condescendingly or with any ire, he tries to be understanding and careful and thoughtful where rufus couldn’t be.” - @buffyspeak
And one of the things that’s so fascinating to me about the relationship dynamic between Dan and Jenny is that they essentially have about four different styles of sibling relationships, all nestled into their one.
At times, especially towards the beginning of the show, Dan and Jenny have a fairly “typical” big brother/little sister dynamic - Jenny is teasing and affectionately annoying towards Dan, Dan is teasing and affectionately exasperated towards Jenny, but they ultimately look out for and try to protect/take care of one another the way that siblings do. But there’s a shift, I think, when Alison leaves - Rufus is suddenly acting as a single father, and Dan is put in the position where he not only needs to look out for Jenny as her big brother, but as a pseudo-mother of sorts - he’s the one who ends up playing mediator between Rufus and Jenny’s growing conflicts, who tries to give her the advice and guidance that she’s not getting from either of her actual parents, and is even the one who Rufus, at times, turns to to talk out the parenting decisions he makes in relation to Jenny. Which brings up another facet of their dynamic that only grows as the show goes on and Jenny starts to struggle more and more - the golden child and the “problem” child.
One thing I’ve noticed is that a lot of the Rufus discourse really hinges on whether a fan is paying more attention to Dan as a character or to Jenny, because the Rufus in Dan’s story is often a very different figure than the Rufus in Jenny’s. Dan’s Rufus is a compassionate, loving, fair-minded dad, who affords Dan a level of respect and independence while also upholding strong moral values he expects his son to live up to. Jenny’s Rufus, on the other hand, is a far more controlling and at times almost immature figure, sometimes fighting with Jenny like a peer rather than a parent - a father who fails to offer his daughter the same respect and understanding he affords his son. And while none of this is Dan’s fault, how can Jenny not be a little resentful of it, of him - that Dan is treated like a person while Jenny is often made to feel like more of a project.
And yet, in spite of that, I would argue there’s another dimension of their relationship that probably plays a key role in keeping them close as the series wears on - Dan and Jenny as childhood friends. This is something that I feel doesn’t come up in the show enough but is still interesting in light of the way their dynamic evolves - based on what we know of their upbringing, it doesn’t seem like Dan and Jenny had a lot of other friends coming into the Upper East Side. I mean, we’re told that pretty explicitly with Dan, given that Vanessa seems to be the only other person he’s really close to outside of his family, prior to dating Serena. But it seems like Jenny didn’t really have any other close friends herself - at least no one close enough to stay in touch with after she moves from public school to private. It seems like - especially in the space of time that Vanessa was living in Vermont - Dan and Jenny were likely each other’s two closest friends, and I think considering how enmeshed their later social circles become, that adds an interesting nuance as well. Dan isn’t just Jenny’s big brother, he’s also her sister and sometimes her mother and kind of her rival and always her longtime friend.

Can't believe I thought of The Wizard of freaking Oz first & not this one; really, it should be a crime!
Gossip Girl: LITG edition - who is who?
I nominate either Hamish (mostly because it's funny to imagine, I want to see that man in everything), Erikah or Summer for the role as our gossip sneezer
Hi Saga! Thanks for the ask!
Yes, I loooooooove OG Gossip Girl and I have had a thought on it, though many people may not completely agree with my casting. No one is fully, exactly going to fit here but I tried to use the more affluent Islanders to cast it. I do have 'xoxo' in my drafts, but I doubt it'll ever see light of day. I put the other characters under the cut but left Blair and Serena visible. I don't think there's a perfect match for either and if I were to write this, Blair and Serena would both be OCs. Again, I don't think any Islander fully matches any of the GG characters but mostly because they're so ruthless at different times.
Blair Waldorf - Honestly, no one can match Blair. She is her own level and she's amazing, but if I absolutely had to cast her: Lexi. Lexi is so self-conscious and has a bit of low self-esteem. Though hers is her sister, Blair compares herself to Serena.
Serena Van Der Woodsen - Serena is so bubbly and captivates everyone. I would say Chelsea, but Chelsea is so much of a people pleaser that I don't think she would do a lot of the manipulating Serena did. Now it may be because I didn't do a female route in S8 but I could see Claudia being similar to Serena. She's sunshine and everyone loves her, but cross her and she won't let you forget that she could take that crown away from you before you could even comprehend.
Chuck Bass - Oh Chuck. Probably the best and worst lay of your life. Whoever could fit this super rich business guy with Daddy issues? Obviously this one is Hamish.
Dan Humphrey - Sadly, Dan is sneaky and the most manipulative of everyone and because he's a writer that wrote himself into the story...James. I hate it, too. Sorry.
Jenny Humphrey - This one was hard. I'm obviously going by personality here and not by how I have Dan casted so the Islander that fits Jenny the best and may spiral the way she did would be Jen. They both love fashion, a little edgy, have bite.
Nate Archibald - Again, I'm using affluent Islanders that would actually, possibly be apart of the UES (sorry Lewie you're not affluent). Nate is so boring to me and has no personality except for the fact that he's so perfect that he does no wrong and has this like, exceptional moral compass. He's always pushed by his parents to do things he's not really in favor of doing. Hmmm who else has that problem....Tom.
Georgina Sparks - Georgina is a whole ass mood. She's diabolical and is probably the smartest out of all of the UES. If I had to pick someone to be casted as Georgina, it would probably be Hannah. She flips a switch pretty quickly and doesn't seem to mind getting her hands dirty and pissing off that people she previously thought of as friends.
Carter Baizen - Sorry it's Eddie. I don't make the rules lmfao and I am a Carter apologist. I would have loved to see Serena end up with Carter in the end (yes, even over Nate).
Prince Louis - Youcef would so turn around and be a petty bitch. I do think Louis was actually a good guy but Blair played him the fool too many times for him to let that last one slide. Honestly? Justice for Louis because he was actually so good for Blair despite the little fit she pitched when he acted like he was just a driver on that date.
Lily - Oh come on! This one was so fucking easy. It's Juliet. I don't think I need to explain this one.
Rufus - This one was not easy. He talks about waffles a lot, but is also a good dad (okay, not always when it came to Jenny). Since he's really big into music...I don't know. I can't say Rocco, even though the hair is there, you know? Some part of me wants to say Max, but I don't know why. I think it's because I imagine that Max was similar to how Rufus was when he was young.
Eric Van Der Woodsen - I almost forgot Eric!!!!!! But he's just so special, I can't actually pick someone for him. Literally no Islander fits Eric, but I guess we can say Rohan or Tim. I just think Eric is so specific and the issues his character tackles are so important that you'd need an OC for him too.
Vanessa Abrams - In my GG x LITG universe, she doesn't exist. Bye.

i know in this part of the fandom we talk a lot about how serena (and to a slightly lesser extent nate) needed to get the hell out of new york and the upper east side to actually thrive and self-actualize, and i do agree, but that train of thought always makes me wonder - do you think any of the show’s major characters (sans chuck but fuck him) were actually being served by staying in new york, or would they all have been better off packing up and starting over somewhere new? and, to that end, where would you see each character ending up if they had left the ues as adults?
Yes! Serena is really the only character who no matter what I think would be unhappy staying in New York full time.
I love the idea of California!Nate but also I think simply getting away from the UES would be fine for him (this is true of most characters). Like a Nate who lives in Lower Manhattan or Brooklyn or something would be a very happy Nate imo. (NYU!Nate my beloved)
Same goes with Eric! In her latest fic, Liz has Eric living in the East Village which just makes soooo much sense to me.
Rufus and Lily living on the UES just makes me angry. Like they probably kept them there for production reasons so as not to build another set, but character wise they should’ve moved anywhere else when they got engaged. Personally, I like the idea of them finding a neighborhood that suits both of them a la the Upper West Side or something.
Both Dan and Vanessa I think are most served by staying in New York. Like I think they’ll both go and live other places for a little bit, follow the work, but given what they want to do and also just who they are as people, I think New York/Brooklyn will forever be home to them. And I really do think they belong there.
I know Dairis and all but…I really like the idea of Blair staying and making a life on her own terms in New York. I think her powerful woman goal makes the most sense in New York. I think it’s a big part of who she is as a person just like Dan and Vanessa. Sometimes I struggle to see her ever leaving the UES unless it’s a compromise with Dan (I love Liz’s idea of them in Gramercy Park) or it’s post her marriage to Chuck, in which case I’d think she’d run sprinting from the UES.
Jenny is maybe the hardest one for me. Cause I do ultimately think a career in fashion would be best served in New York. But I also think it would take a lot for her to ever willingly come back from London. But I do like the idea of Jenny returning to NY and moving somewhere trendy. Hell, I could actually really see a modern Jenny killing it in Astoria.

I've had this idea floating around my head and I know you're an Alison Humphrey appreciater
have you considered an AU where she moves back to the city at some point? I was thinking in season 3. Like things didn't work out with Alex in Hudson and she wants to be closer to her kids. How do you think Dan and Jenny would react? How about Rufus and Lily? (I love the van der Humphreys but lbr Alison probably didn't)
oooohhh. i love that. i never actually thought about her coming back, because it always felt like something that'd be unhealthy for her, in my head? like we don't get to see the rufus/alison relationship much. everything we see is through dan & jenny's eyes, we don't see rufus and alison on their own at all the way we see rufus & lily. so i always got the sense that like, alison leaving like that... there was definitely something in the ruflison dynamic that made her want to flee, something that her children couldn't possibly have understood and something messy and grey that was like. being tied down to rufus, being committed to rufus in that relationship, was causing her mental distress/mental agony, enough so for her to just straight up abandon the family like that. because when we do see alison with dan & jenny, it's clear to me that she cares for them. so then why would she leave them the way she did?
to be clear, i don't think that rufus was like. abusive or toxic or a shitty husband, i just think that alison and rufus werent' compatible. it's canonically stated that alison is lily's rebound, which i think implies that rufus has spent years looking for a person who isn't there in alison, ie, setting himself up for constant disappointment. we don't know much about alison herself, or what she was expecting from rufus, whether she loved him deeply or whether maybe she was using him to emotionally get over an ex, too, or whether it was some other middle ground or combination of everything.
so yeah that does sound like a ramble, but i just wanted to explain that i can't really see alison coming back, because with the headcanons/understanding that i have, i feel like it'd not be a situation she'd want to put herself into? but i really really love this headcanon and this concept, and if @strideofpride or @terrainofheartfelt or any other alison enthusiasts on here have an actual answer for you & your concept and what that'd look like, i would LOVE to see it!

This was requested on AO3 by Westerngoddess.
This was a birthday request. So, happy birthday to Westerngoddess! I hope that you have a fantastic birthday! I also hope that this oneshot is to your liking!
I think you all know what I think about Gajeel x Lucy x Rogue. I love RoLu. I love GaLu. Putting them together would just make it better.
Also, as you can probably tell by the title, I am basing this oneshot off of the song "Jenny" by Studio Killers. I've been itching to write a fic based on it, so why not this one?
I hope you enjoy!
We Wanna Ruin our Friendship! (Gajeel x Lucy x Rogue)
Gajeel was in love with Lucy.
That was pretty obvious to anybody that wasn't the blonde in question. It was a known fact in the guild that wherever Lucy was, Gajeel wasn't too far away. He sat with her in the guild, went on jobs with her, and protected her from creeps. He was clearly besotted.
The dragon slayer had surprised everybody by worming his way into Lucy's life and becoming one of her closest friends. And Lucy didn't seem to mind at all. The pair knew a lot about each other, having even had several sleepovers at each other's places, gone on countless jobs together, and spent time together outside of the guild.
It became apparent that Black Steel Gajeel was in love whenever he heard her voice and laughter, saw her smile, or even looked at her. The red blush that would spread across his cheeks and the small smile that would make its way onto his face were more than enough to know that his feelings for the celestial wizard were more than platonic.
However, despite the entire guild knowing about his feelings for her, he would vehemently deny such a thing. It didn't matter how much Levy and Mira would tease him and encourage him to ask her out, he would claim that his feelings for her weren't romantic and stick to the claim.
Truth was, he was aware of his feelings for Lucy. He wasn't an idiot. He knew that he wanted to make the kind and beautiful woman his girlfriend. He loved everything about her. Her strawberry and vanilla scent was intoxicating. Her blonde hair looked as though it was weaved from the sun's golden rays. Her voice and laughter were like a melody he could listen to on end. Her eyes were a deep, chocolatey brown that he would oftentimes find himself getting lost in.
He knew that he was smitten with her. Hell, he was even using one of her shirts that she didn't want anymore as a pillowcase. How could he not be aware of how he felt about her? The problem was though, how could he tell her? He didn't know if she felt the same way, nor did he want to scare her off. Even if she didn't return his feelings, he still wanted to be her friend.
He had been tempted to ask Mira for help, but then he would shudder at the thought of whatever over-the-top plot that she would come up with and quickly decide against it. He had asked Levy a few times for advice, but as she would say to simply tell Lucy. That wasn't much help. So, he was stuck.
Like any other dragon slayer, he wasn't keen on the opposite sex flirting with Lucy. Simply seeing another man eye his Bunny Girl with clearly less than chaste intentions was enough to make him punch the bastard halfway across Magnolia. So, imagine the rage that he felt when he saw Sabertooth's Shadow Dragon Slayer walk into the guild with a smiling Lucy by his side.
Rogue was enamored with Lucy.
He didn't make attempts to hide that fact. Whenever one of his guildmates would ask him if he was in love with her, he would give them a simple 'yes.' This had resulted in constant teasing from Sting and Orga while Yukino, Minerva, and Rufus would encourage him to confess to her. However, he wasn't sure about that. He only ever saw her when she visited Sabertooth, which was an occurrence that wasn't nearly as frequent as he wished it was.
He always knew when Lucy was visiting before she stepped through the guildhall doors, having long ago memorized her scent to the point that he was able to smell it when she hadn't even reached the entrance to Sabertooth.
He had managed to form a close friendship with her, much to even his own surprise. Every time she visited, the two of them and Frosch would go shopping and have lunch together. It was something that they both clearly enjoyed doing. Rogue has even tagged along with her on jobs.
The dragon slayer wasn't the type to flirt or make attempts to make his feelings for the Fairy Tail mage known. He simply didn't hide it. He was often tempted to tell her how he felt, but every time he tried, he would become suddenly tongue-tied and divert his attention to something else. He had never guessed that having a crush would be this trying. He wasn't even able to put into words what he liked about her or why he loved her. He simply did.
She was kind, beautiful, forgiving, supportive, and strong. How could he not love her? The fact that Frosch adored her and she loved the exceed just as much was definitely a factor. He loved everything about her. He simply loved her. The mere thought of her would send his heartbeat into an erratic pace and his cheeks would burn with the redness of a blush. He even had a small collection of some of her things. Just a hair tie, a tube of lip gloss, and a book she was planning to get rid of. Things that she wouldn't miss but reminded him of her.
It wasn't lost on him that there would be some other men that had feelings for her, after all, this was Lucy we're talking about. However, he never expected his main rival to be none other than Gajeel Redfox, the man that he had looked up to for years.
Gajeel and Rogue were not fond of each other.
That was evident from the way that they would glare at each other whenever they were in the presence of the woman that they were practically having a silent war over, Lucy. Each of them would glare at the other, try to hog her attention, and would frequently argue over which of them she liked more. Their guilds were concerned that eventually, the two dragon slayers would end up getting into an all-out fight over her.
The conflict that Lucy was somehow unaware of went on for some time until one day, Rogue came up with a solution. The pair had been visiting Lucy at her apartment and were waiting for her return after she had stepped out to deal with Natsu's sudden visit.
Rogue had looked up from the book he was reading and cleared his throat, getting the attention of the dragon slayer across from him, who sneered in response. The Shadow Dragon Slayer bypassed all unnecessary talk and got right to the point, saying that they should bite the bullet and confess their feelings to Lucy. If she chose one of them, then the other would be happy with her decision. If she chose neither of them, then they would both accept it and remain her friends. And, if on the off chance that she loved both of them, then they would agree to share her, if that was what she desired.
Gajeel had simply glared at the other black-haired man, thinking over the proposal. After a long stretch of silence, he finally nodded in response, accepting the terms. They then resigned themselves to waiting for Lucy to return to where they were sitting in the main room of her apartment. They wanted to ruin their friendship with her and become her lovers instead.
After getting Natsu to leave, Lucy had walked back into the main room when and found her two close friends sitting across from each other, Gajeel on one side and Rogue on the other. She had smiled at them and asked what they wanted to do. Rogue had answered that they first had something to tell her.
Lucy had watched as the dragon slayers stood up and walked toward her before they confessed to her that they both loved her. They encouraged her to be honest about her feelings for them, assuring her that they would be satisfied with whatever her decision would be. The two men had been expecting a few different reactions, but what they weren't expecting was for Lucy to kiss each of them and confess that she loved them both and didn't want to choose between them. The dragon slayers, following through with what they had agreed upon, accepted this and proposed that she date both of them.
This was how Gajeel, Lucy, and Rogue surprise both Fairy Tail and Sabertooth by entering into a polyamorous relationship.

gojo satoru - chuck bass. charming, your typical ladies man, suave and unpredictable. he is sure to leave your legs sore, chest and neck filled with bite marks, but your names will not be remembered. will do whatever it takes to defend the ones he loves, but don't get him wrong, this tall hot stuff will not hesitate playing dirty either. but nobody really knows what stronger g really feels or thinks about. after all, a mask can really hide what kind of person anyone is really like.
shoko ieiri - vanessa abrams. she's good but poor s, thinking that things would go back to the way they used to be. soft spoken, hard working but what does she feel when one goes down memory lane and thinks about the past interactions she had moments before everything goes downhill? should've asked him to stay and stared harder at the ticking time bomb, s.
geto suguru - nate archibald. oh g, what do you mean that humans are good, kind, and worth saving? they'd betray their own kind, so what makes him think that they would treat the special ones differently? who's to say that g won't change his ways in order to restore the balance he thought existed in the first place? don't play with fire, kids, especially near a bomb-like heart.
nanami kento - rufus humphrey. live life with no regrets, they say. but i am sure this father figure has his own regrets. it's just a matter of time, when he will finally be reunited with the person who he abandoned once to make him rethink the words he wanted to say to his dear i.
mei mei - georgina sparks. what's wrong with being a little wild from time to time? looks like m here resembles g in a lot of ways, from scheming, backstabbing to being someone you can trust your life with. as long as the money keeps on running. oh you know, your typical wild child stuff.
yuji itadori - serena van der woodsen. everyone who meets little i will always fall for him. and the need to destroy but also protect y. what kind of charms did little y used to the point that even the special curses had its soul wrapped around y's finger? don't bite off more than what you can chew, i, otherwise that demon in you will be too hard for you or anyone to control.
utahime iori - blair waldorf. queen b. sophisticated, beautiful, regal and poise. but one warrior scar can tell you thousands worth of stories. wasn't she often seen as weak? just because you appear weak to others doesn't mean you really are. beware ladies and gents, you might not know the abilities of the person you see as a lesser individual compared to yourself.
yuta okkotsu - dan humphrey. spotted. lonely boy who is haunted by the spirit of his former lover. y really thinks that he was cursed, but little does he know that he was the one who put the curse onto his lover's poor spirit. careful y, you'll be running out of lockers to hide the bodies and guilt.
kugisaki nobara - jenny humphrey. little j and little k. the little queens of constance billard and jujutsu high. but for how long? sure, her love for fashion and that youthful soul of hers catches the attention. and the need to join the upper east siders' clique but her bubbles are just waiting to be popped. don't say i didn't warn you.
fushiguro megumi - eric van der woodsen. spotted. another lonely boy. now, what do boys from troubled families tend to have? mommy and daddy issues. seems to me that little m still doesn't know the atrocities his daddy dearest committed. but you didn't hear it from me. let the boy find it out with the help of stronger s.
fushiguro toji - bartholomew bass. ruthless, sexy as hell, maybe even hell himself because everything he touches burns. will he have a chance of redemption or will he waste it away like how he sold his soul the moment he decided to throw it into the realms of money, lust and desire? will family be his saviour? or will he leave it again just like he did on the day little m was born?
rumours has it that little k's whereabouts is still unknown and stronger g is locked up in a place that neither you or me can reach. but what is life for these jujutsu sorcerers and curse users without the revoltingly delicious taste of drama? you know you love me. xoxo, gossip girl.

What is your favorite Gossip Girl episode?
this is actually a fantastic question because i've never really thought about it haha but if i had to pick one it would actually be the pilot! it has all the things that was good about the show in the first place : the sweetness of the humphreys (and their underlying problems like rufus and alison's marriage, dan's everlasting pessimism and jenny's optimism in regards to it), return of mysterious cool girl serena, the mess that is the upper east side that is kind of fucked up but not so much that it makes chuck bass a hero because he's still the villain here!! as he should be!!!, blair's insecurities in regards to her relationship with nate and the return of serena (it is also here where it first highlights the serena is the sunshine to blair's darkness, which is a dynamic i always find interesting), there's also the van der woodsens' messiness (and sweetness too! bc eric and serena's relationship is one of my favourites and i think is super underrated, we don't talk about it enough tbh, and in some ways i think their relationship draws parallels to dan and jenny's as well, which now that i've thought of it, is quite interesting to me) to deal with like lily being a shit parent and caring more about how the outside world views her than she does her children, which is very ues fucked up of her.
we also get very perfect introductions to nearly all the characters and their dynamics with each other, just enough that you care about (most of) them but that you don't know everything about them yet, dan's judgemental side but also his love and protectiveness for his family and in particular, for jenny (i also love that we are really viewing the world of gossip girl through his eyes), jenny's wide-eyed dreams and innocence that is very much like that of your average 14 year old (which she is, by the way, 14), serena's sweetness, her love for her family (and again, especially eric) but also for blair, the way she holds her friendship with blair in such high regard, battling with her guilt, and we see that she's still keeping secrets, nate being a pretty boy that is also fighting battles of his own, his infatuation with serena, the expectations of his father and his family legacy, as well as blair, chuck, being the asshole and scumbag that he is, and in this episode at least, is not being framed as a hero in some twisted version of reality, dan and serena's very teenager, first love, awkwardness (and this really is one of my favourite parts about season 1, just how normal their relationship seems to be), blair's insecurities and her relationship with her mother, who does nothing but put her down.
this is a huge essay that no one asked for but here it is anyways!! the pilot episode of gossip girl is far from a cinematic masterpiece, but from where i'm standing it is most definitely among gg's best episodes, and is really incredibly interesting to break down, because it is everything the show was meant to be, and everything the show never was, and now i feel like rewriting the entire show.

I finished s3 of og gossip girl and here's my thoughts:
I thought after Blair and Chuck got together at the end of s2 that they would break up in like ep 3 or 4 and get back together in like the last 2 or 3 eps of s3 but I was surprised when they were together for about half the season or so
As much as I love Blair and Chuck and their chemistry but I thought they would be toxic together but they were more healthier than I thought they would be excluding the last couple of eps of s3
I was starting to think that Jenny is becoming less annoying but that season proved me wrong and proved that she will always be annoying
Vanessa and Serena still annoying as usual
It's funny how 3 seasons have passed and still Serena is the same from s1 and literally hasn't had one bit of a character development
Nate is still likable
Chuck made some dumb decisions but he's chuck bass so it's hard to be angry at him but selling Blair for his hotel is the stupiesd and lowest thing he has done so far
The storyline with Chuck's mother is so heartbreaking
Blair still the iconic queen that she is
I was not expecting to see Hilary Duff this season but it was nice seeing her nevertheless
My man Sebastian Stan was seen more in this season compared to s1 & s2 and I'm not complaining
Also my other man Aaron Tveit was in this season more as well which was nice but they made him an asshole
Lady Gaga sang bad romance while Hillary Duff was talking to Dan and that scene made me realize that this show must have been huge back in the day
We still love and stan Dorota in this house
Lily has grown on me but Still my favorite parent on this show is Rufus
It was nice to see a storyline surrounding Serena's dad because I've been wondering since s1 where he was
I thought they would skip the university time but it was nice to see it so far
The characters here are by far the quickest characters I have seen in any media to move on and jump from one relationship to another
Still confused about how I should feel about Dan since knowing he would be gossip girl
I'm still wondering who would Nate end up with by the end of the show and I hope it's not Vanessa
I wonder if Jenny is in S4 or was that her last season
That Thanksgiving scene is so iconic

i know i once sent you an ask about your thoughts on Serena and motherhood, but what about your thoughts on Eric's relationship to fatherhood/if he'd want to be one, etc
Oooh yes that’s a fun one! Well. Unfun for Eric, but—
So the thing about William VDW is he’s one of the very few people we see Eric straight up write off: “The window for that closed somewhere between my twelfth birthday and, um, my suicide attempt… Going through all that without a father made me realize that I don't need one.”
He takes a lot of abandonment, betrayal, etc through the series, and he rarely holds a grudge. Serena, Lily, Jenny: all of them are still family, still loved ones, even while regularly in conflict with a Jenny he proclaims he’ll still have her back if the problem is real, and all it takes is… being there sometimes. Apologizing sometimes. Trying
Fatherhood, for Eric, has one face in complete and utter absence. Unlike Serena, who uses that openness to hope, Eric replies with the (perhaps more grounded) “well fuck you too.” It is auxiliary to his personhood.
I think it makes sense that Eric is the one of these kids who’s actually had some help processing his trauma.
But he also implies that he didn’t always think that way. (Return to Serena, Lily, Jenny: Eric is not cold by nature. His walls come from repetition. Implicitly, it took his a real long time before he stopped hoping for his dad to give a fuck.)
Now, further, we have the rufly paradox: that they’re better parents to their stepkids than the ones they’ve had the whole time. Eric and Rufus have a good relationship; they’re affectionate and respectful and loving towards each other. When Rufus is thinking about proposing, he talks to Eric, who’s delighted.
(This is despite, one might note, him being Jenny’s confidant throughout the emancipation saga.)
I think Eric manages to come out of his adolescence with a weirdly healthy view of fatherhood. He definitely still has issues, but he also has a pretty good dad.
When it comes to being a father himself, I think Eric is definitely not a “well, if my partner wants” kinda guy. Like stop no do not pass go do not collect two hundred dollars—if he’s having a kid, he wants that kid, and he’s never gonna run the risk of that kid being abandoned. Eric is very aware that his parents had kids because they were supposed to, rather than because they wanted to.
I could see him arranging a childless little family and being very happy that way, but my preference is yeah, he would want and have kids.
He’s really scared, once it starts looking like a legitimate plan rather than a castle in the air, and he stays scared for a while. He’s mean, he’s sad, neither of his parents were ever there what does he do?
He’s also a great dad

yea people don’t like jenny/nate coz she got him drunk so that’s she could take advantage of him while he couldn’t consent to make it seem like he cheated on serena. there’s a reason next to no one them like their hate is very much deserved
oh boy... there's a lot to unpack here and this answer is gonna be really long, so just, stay with me okay?
Obviously, that's not good, I never said that and I never will. But if you follow me you probably know that I tend to ignore canon when it's badly written, and the whole Jenny/Jenate thing was very badly handled. I like Jenny and Nate because they have ✨potential✨ if you get what I'm saying. I thought they were extremely cute in season 2 and I really wish they would've been explored more in depth and like actually be given a chance to have an actual relationship.
I like Jenny and Nate because in her entire life Nate is the only one who's been there for her without judgement. She has always been my favourite GG character so I guess I like to see her with Nate cause he's literally the only one who consistently treats her with respect. I'm also a big sucker for the "my brother's best friend" trope so there's that lol.
Now... onto the whole “Jenny trying to steal Nate from Serena” thing, cause the whole situation is really way more complicated then you make it seem. I think the fandom’s issue with this really comes from this certain Surface Level Activism that’s very common on tumblr.
Like, people here are so quick to condemn anything they see as bad™ without thinking about it with any sort of depth and nuance, which ultimately doesn’t do anything good.
Now, user @rainathorpe (who doesn’t even ship jenny and nate but actually sees jenny as a lesbian which is totally valid) has already made a post about this and probably phrased it way better than I ever will but I’ll do my best while simultaneously linking their posts lol or at least a couple of them there was one in particular I couldn’t find but oh well I guess I’ll have to do without it.
I haven’t actually watched the show in a while, but I have seen it like 7 times over, so I’d like to believe I remember it pretty well, and I have no idea what you mean with “she got him drunk so that’s she could take advantage of him while he couldn’t consent” like, that never happened???? What I remember was that she slept over at his/Chuck’s place a couple of times where she and Nate literally just played Wii. And that she slept in Nate’s shirt that she stole and put in her bag so Serena would see it and think he was cheating. Then on his birthday she distracted him even tho she knew Serena was planning a surprise and later kissed him during the game. Don’t get me wrong, that is all BAD, but you make it sound like she got him drunk and r*ped him, which, no???? Like maybe they got drunk together one time (I remember there being a party) but the only time she did anything like that was when she kissed him, and that situation, while still BAD, is no where near the level you’re accusing her of.
And also, does no one remember that breaking Nate and Serena up was Chuck’s idea, not Jenny’s? (post about that HERE) Like, I’m not trying to completely absolve Jenny of responsebilitby for her actions, but doesn’t the fact that she’s being manipulated into doing this by an older man, who has way more power and money than her and who also tried to rape her once, tipp you off that she’s also partly a victim in this situation?
I also implore you to think WHY Jenny’s doing all this. it goes back to what I said earlier about Nate being the only one there for her, or to quote @rainathorpe directly “nate’s the only person who’s seen her at her most fucked up state and still retained respect for her”. Jenny’s in such a bad place in season 3 (and onward too, let’s be honest, post HERE) and like, no one helps her!!! Rufus is just a horrible dad (post HERE), the writers pretty much forgot that she and Dan are siblings, and Eric isn’t friends with her anymore. The only one she has is Nate. After all, this happens after Nate saves her after Agnes drugs her and basically leaves her to get assaulted which also makes it really weird that you think she would get Nate drunk and assault him after that like she would NOT it would be incredibly ooc. So I think it’s natural that this 16 year old (let’s not forget that she’s also a child) latches onto the one thing she has when her whole life is falling apart. Even if she does it in a very bad way, and yes, that should be acknowledged and criticized.
I think that overall the way the fandom views Jenny is just so fucked up and no the hate she gets is not deserved. Like, of all the bad things Jenny has done that I just wrote about, how many just as bad or worse things have the other characters, namely Blair, done? People literally hate Jenny for the same reasons they love Blair, and like, just say you’re classist and move on? The show completely falls into that trap too as they start villainizing the poorer characters (Jenny, Vanessa, Ivy, Juliet) while the rich mains gets everything they ever wanted without consequences. Before you attack me, I’m not saying that Ivy and Juliet were “good actually”, but there is still a pattern of making the villains mid or lower class and it’s disgusting.
I don’t even know how to conclude this really but just approach situations with more nuance in the future will you?

tv rewatch: gg edition, ep. 10
“Hey, so has Blair mentioned who’s escorting her?” Nate, you cannot be serious.
“Every time I see her, she’s lighter, she’s happier, she’s less ... ... Blair.” Nate, sit down.
“With my dad in rehab, the pressure is off and I can see Blair clearly” but the pressure wasn’t on for your entire relationship, Nate. Shut up.
“Jenny, what are you even doing here?” Serena, that sounds way more hostile than you intended.
“Oh, hello, mother.” LOL Lily. She is SO unsung.
“Isn’t she’s great?” “She’s ... she’s great, she’s something.” LOL READ BODY LANGUAGE, SERENA.
This Chair makeout is one of my favourites just because in the bloopers, they kept going and going until someone was finally like, “You take your own cue!” and Leighton was like OH!
“And the prince, you know, he’s a great dancer and all.” Lmao, Nate, shut up.
Cece’s manipulation is kind of low stakes tbh, like she uses her illness just to get Serena to do cotillion?
Blair in jeans!
Blair texting Chuck while with Nate is pretty cute. Ah, I always get in my Chair feels in the first two seasons.
“Allison, I didn’t expect to see you ... here.” LILY’S SHADE.
Dan in his striped shirt.
His hair is steadily becoming less offensive.
LOL Sebastian Stan in this is always funny now.
“Where were you?” “Where wasn’t he? Gossip Girl even had a designated Carter map on Spotted.” Shouldn’t  you know this, Dan, since, you know, you’re gossip girl?
“I also went pheasant hunting with the sheik while I was there.” I thought you disowned your parents and didn’t have their money?
Jenny’s dress is awful.
“Then you are grounded for a week” “WHAT???” Lol OK, Jenny.
I know I keep saying it but kdramas do class divides so much better. Cece’s speech is too pointed.
“I’ll tell you what’s going on, I just became your escort to the ball.” Lmao  I feel like Dan and Lily are the same person.
“I would just like to say how proud I am of Miss Waldorf and her commitment to Mr. Archibald EVEN THOUGH HE RUINED HER 17TH BIRTHDAY...” this is the most teen thing Chuck has ever done.
I LOVE HOW OLD THE PHONES ARE and they were hot shit back then.
Serena does not look incredible, Dan.
“Serena, that’s what I’m trying to tell you, that woman is the most manipulative person I’ve ever met.” Except for me BECAUSE I’M GOSSIP GIRL.
OK but honestly, what Cece is doing is bullying not manipulation, it’s too direct for it to be manipulation. Telling Lily about that she’s sick so Serena can go to cotillion is manipulative, yes, but the rest of it is just straight up intimidation tactics, she’s using her money as a weapon. They could’ve also gone further with the Lily thing by telling Lily that this is what she wants but she doesn’t want Serena to know that she’s sick so Lily puts her foot down about cotillion and says she has to go or else, thereby making Lily the villain while she remains the cool, free-spirited grandmother because when that DOES happen, it’s too late. It should be an ongoing thing.
“She makes your mother look like Gandhi.” “That’s my grandmother you’re talking about.” LMAO LILY GETS NO LOVE.
“Let’s get Carter on the phone.”
This scene could’ve been better. Dan’s delivery of this revelation was pretty bad because his sarcasm took precedence that he didn’t try to speak to Serena delicately and Serena wasn’t asking the right questions. Dan is like “she offered to buy my dad off so I wouldn’t come tonight” and she’s just like “Nope.” Dan could be like, why would I lie? and Serena could talk about how there could be a mistake, she could call out Dan’s tone and then he leaves and when Cece comes instead of her automatically being like, k time for Carter, she could milk the grandmother routine and say how she’d never do such a thing, she doesn’t understand why he’d lie about this etc. Like manipulation takes a lot more subtlety than what’s going on. This is all way too direct.
Lmao Nate is so unbearable this episode.
“Make it stop, you sound like me.” LMAO, BLAIR.
Chuck is more manipulative than Cece.
Cece does look like she’s about to go catatonic after that “beds as many billionaires as she can” line though. Well done.
How did TVD do a better ball scene than GG?
I also prefer The O.C.’s cotillion. Lmao because it actually tried to look like a legit cotillion.
But The Pierces in the background is pretty atmospheric even though it’s also absolutely ridiculous that they’re performing at a debutante ball.
“SHE’S MY GIRLFRIEND.” oh, nate.
“And you said if I did this I could be myself but you don’t really want that do you?” “That’s not entirely true.” I DIED. LILY.
“All you care about when people look at me is what they think of you” but the thing is I need to see this? Like I need to see Lily being directly affected by Serena’s choices, see how society looks at her and their family for this to be more than dialogue.
I totally forgot that Serena had already slept with Carter.
“When I was your age, I would’ve been lucky to find a guy like you. And I kind of did.” That’s his father, Lily.
Also really, what was Rufus like in the past then? Like what kind of rockstar was he?
Oh Chuck, just can’t win.
Serena turning around to see Dan at cotillion is pretty sweet, ngl.
The problem with this cotillion plot line is that it’s too small. Like if this is about legacy and if this is actually about introducing Serena to society then we need to see what cotillion actually means in this world, we need to see how big of a deal it is, one reporter showing up to interview Blair doesn’t mean anything. We need to see Lily’s and Cece’s peers gossip and talk. Also if this is all about how Cece’s values are old-fashioned then either cotillion needs to be the traditional white dress, white gloves ball
Tumblr media
or it’s what we see and Cece complains about how modern/contemporary it’s getting.
Chuck is so Chuck. “Hey! Have you seen Blair Waldorf?” reminds me of when I went up to an acquaintance and I didn’t say hi I just asked where my friend was, I was like “Where’s Scott?” and from then on he - the acquaintance - just called me “Where’s Scott?”
Chuck looks genuinely heartbroken at seeing Blair and Nate. *sigh* too bad they get absolutely terrible.
Nate’s grin is so cringe, lol.
Rufly angst! “I never should’ve let you let me go.” DE could never.
APOLOGIZE, YASSSSSSSSSSSSS. SONG IS STILL A BOP DON’T @ ME.
I’m holding on your rope got me ten feet off the grouuuuuuuuuuuuund.
I know this is a Derena moment but what makes it for me is Serena looking at Lily to see if she can go with him and Lily saying yes. It’s a Serena/Lily moment for me.
Oh Blair, Nate doesn’t deserve sex with you.
Chuck, leaving the city, you are so DRAMATIC.
xoxo, zalrb.
